TRANSPARENT PROCESS
How We Source Colombian Emeralds
Colombian Gems operates two distinct procurement pathways, each designed for different client objectives and sourcing requirements.
Investment-grade emerald procurement follows a protected, deliberate process with extended timelines and escrow management. Trade and jewellery sourcing operates with faster turnaround based on inventory availability and established mine relationships.
Investment-Grade Emerald Procurement
A selective, capital-conscious process designed for collectors, family offices, and investors acquiring significant Colombian emeralds as alternative assets or portfolio diversification.
15-45 Days
Extended sourcing timeline for investment-grade specifications from Colombia's premier mines, including international certification and secure delivery.
Percentile-Based Service Fee
Service fee structure calculated on final certified value, reflecting complexity, risk management, and capital protection throughout the acquisition process.
Escrow Protected
Funds secured in licensed third-party escrow once stone profile is approved. Full protection until final certification and client approval.
Investment-Grade Process
Eight deliberate steps from initial consultation to certified delivery. Each phase includes documentation, independent verification, and client approval—designed for capital-conscious acquisition
Initial Consultation & Requirements
We begin with a detailed consultation to understand your investment goals, preferred characteristics (color, clarity, carat weight, origin), and budget range. This can be conducted virtually or in person in Sydney. We assess your timeline and provide initial recommendations based on current mine availability.
What You Provide: Investment budget, preferred specifications, intended use (collection, jewelry, resale), and timeline expectations.
Mine Sourcing & Selection
Using our direct relationships with mining families in Muzo, Chivor, and Coscuez, we source stones matching your specifications. This typically takes 15-30 days depending on rarity and specific requirements. We provide regular updates with photos and videos of candidate stones for your review.
Timeline: 15-30 days for most specifications. Rare characteristics or large sizes may require extended sourcing periods.
Escrow Deposit & Stone Reservation
Once you approve a candidate stone, we reserve it with a secure escrow deposit (typically 25-30% of estimated value). Your funds are held by a licensed third-party escrow service until final approval. This protects both parties and ensures the stone remains available during certification processes.
Protection: Escrow funds are refundable if the stone fails to meet agreed specifications or certification standards. Full transparency guaranteed.
Local Gemological Evaluation (Colombia)
Before export, the stone undergoes comprehensive evaluation by certified Colombian gemologists. This includes origin verification, treatment disclosure, quality grading, and preliminary certification. We provide you with detailed reports including high-resolution photography and video documentation.
Documentation: Detailed reports on color saturation, clarity grade, cut quality, fluorescence, and any treatments applied.
Export Documentation & Legal Compliance
We handle all export documentation, legal compliance, and customs requirements. This includes Colombian export permits, provenance documentation, conflict-free certification, and compliance with international trade regulations (Kimberley Process equivalents for emeralds).
Legal Assurance: All stones are ethically sourced with complete chain-of-custody documentation and compliance with international regulations.
International Certification
Upon arrival in Australia (or your destination country), the stone is submitted to internationally recognized laboratories (GIA, AGL, or Gübelin for premium stones). This independent verification confirms all qualities and provides investment-grade documentation accepted globally.
Certification: Full laboratory reports including origin confirmation, treatment disclosure, and detailed quality analysis from recognized authorities.
Client Inspection & Final Approval
You have the opportunity to inspect the stone in person (Sydney) or via detailed video consultation. Review all certifications, ask questions, and verify the stone meets your expectations. Only upon your final approval do we proceed to payment completion and delivery arrangements.
Your Protection: If the stone does not meet agreed specifications or certification standards, escrow funds are fully refundable
Secure Delivery & Documentation
Final payment is processed, and the stone is delivered via secure, insured courier to your specified location. You receive complete documentation including all certifications, provenance records, care instructions, and resale guidance. Post-delivery support is always available.
Complete Package: All certifications, insurance documents, care guidelines, and ongoing expert support for your investment.
Investment-Grade Pricing
Percentile-based service fee structure reflecting complexity, risk management, and capital protection.

Trade & Jewellery Procurement
A separate professional pathway designed for jewellers, designers, manufacturers, and production buyers requiring reliable Colombian emerald sourcing with faster turnaround and transparent pricing
How Trade Procurement Works
Sourcing Based on Availability
Trade sourcing operates through established mine relationships and inventory channels in Colombia. Typical turnaround is 7-21 days depending on specifications and current production availability. Stones are pre-evaluated for consistent quality suitable for jewellery production and retail.
Transparent Pricing Agreed Upfront
Pricing is established before sourcing begins based on specifications, quantity, and market conditions. No percentage fees—transparent per-carat or total pricing agreed in advance. Volume considerations available for ongoing supply relationships.
Payment Prior to Release
Trade procurement requires payment in full prior to stone release or international shipment. This structure enables faster turnaround and efficient inventory management. Established clients may qualify for alternative terms after relationship history is established.
Suitable Applications
Trade pathway serves bespoke jewellery commissions, production inventory, matched sets for collections, and retail stock for established jewellers. Stones undergo standard treatment protocols common to the industry, with full disclosure provided.
Long-Standing Colombian Relationships
Three generations of direct mine access enable consistent supply and reliable quality standards. Trade clients benefit from the same Colombian sourcing infrastructure that serves investment-grade acquisitions, adapted for production timelines and commercial requirements.
Trade Procurement Includes
Direct mine sourcing from established Colombian production channels
Pre-evaluation and quality consistency suitable for jewellery applications
Treatment disclosure and handling recommendations
Export documentation and international shipping coordination
Ongoing sourcing support for repeat requirements
Same Standards, Different Pathways
Both procurement pathways are handled with identical standards of discretion, transparency, and expertise. Investment-grade acquisitions receive extended timelines and capital protection measures. Trade sourcing operates with efficiency and reliability for professional buyers. Your requirements determine which pathway serves you best.
Common Questions
Answers to frequently asked questions about our procurement process and investor protection.
How is my deposit protected during the sourcing period?
Your escrow deposit is held by a licensed third-party escrow service, not by Colombian Gems. Funds are only released upon your final approval of the stone and all certifications. If specifications are not met or you choose not to proceed, your deposit is fully refundable minus actual costs incurred (typically limited to initial evaluation fees, disclosed upfront).
What happens if the stone's certified value differs from the estimate?
Final pricing is based on the internationally certified value, not initial estimates. If certification reveals higher value than estimated, we discuss adjustment before final approval. If lower, the price is adjusted downward automatically. Our percentage fee applies to the final certified value, ensuring alignment of interests.
Can I visit the mines in Colombia personally?
For serious investors and repeat clients, we can arrange accompanied mine visits to Muzo, Chivor, or Coscuez. These trips provide invaluable context and strengthen relationships with mining families. Please contact us to discuss arrangements, as timing depends on mine accessibility and security conditions.
What certifications do investment-grade emeralds require?
For investment purposes, we recommend certification from GIA (Gemological Institute of America), AGL (American Gemological Laboratories), or Gübelin (for premium stones). These reports include origin verification, treatment disclosure, and detailed quality analysis. Local Colombian certification is provided for all stones as well.
How do I resell my emerald investment in the future?
We provide ongoing support for resale, including market valuation updates, buyer connections, and auction house introductions when appropriate. Many of our clients return to upgrade their collection, and we facilitate these transactions. The comprehensive documentation package we provide maximizes resale value and buyer confidence.
What are the tax implications for international purchases?
Tax obligations vary by destination country. We provide all necessary customs documentation and declared values for import compliance. However, we recommend consulting your tax advisor regarding capital gains treatment, import duties, and reporting requirements in your jurisdiction. We can connect you with specialized advisors if needed.
